In the township of Pelandaba West in Bulawayo, a powerful Maskandi voice is steadily capturing the attention of music lovers and cultural enthusiasts. Known professionally as UMAQHUZU Omakoya, Ishmael Sbusiso Sibanda is part of a new generation of Zimbabwean artists committed to preserving culture, inspiring communities and keeping the spirit of Maskandi music alive.
With a growing catalogue of music, an award-winning journey and an unwavering passion for storytelling, UMAQHUZU is proving that traditional music still has an important place in modern society. His songs speak directly to everyday people, touching on themes of love, faith, culture, respect and personal growth.
Although many know him today as a musician, UMAQHUZU’s artistic journey began on the dance floor. Before becoming a recording artist, he was a dancer who loved entertaining people and expressing himself through performance. However, it was music that eventually called him into a deeper purpose. In 2022, he officially began releasing his own music, embarking on a journey that continues to gain momentum.
What keeps him motivated is the support he receives from the people who listen to his music.
“The people I sing for are the ones who inspire me,” he says.

Over the years, the talented musician has built an impressive body of work. His debut album, Amanxeba Othando, introduced listeners to his storytelling abilities and emotional depth. The album features tracks such as Amanxeba Othando, Umkhwekazi, Izono, Amasiko, Sabela, UStimela, Ungihlekani, Ngekulunge, Nkosiyami and Amalobolo. Through these songs, he explores issues of love, relationships, culture and life experiences that resonate with many people.
He followed this with his second album, Amathwasa, a project that further established him as a serious voice within the Maskandi genre. The album includes songs such as Emhlane WeSangoma, Ikholo Lami, Umakhelwane, Love Letter, Ingomikuphi, Yamnandi Ingoma, Inyama Yembongolo, Ngizobashaya Ngengoma, Nkosana and Izulu Ikhaya Lami. The project reflects his appreciation for African spirituality, cultural identity and community values.
In 2026, UMAQHUZU continued his artistic growth with the release of his EP titled Bad Luck, featuring the songs Come Duze, Bad Luck and Pumpkin Logistics. He has also released a standalone single, Indidane Yakwethu, which further showcases his creativity and versatility.

Throughout his career, he has worked with several respected artists, including Umhlambi Wezinja, Gaz’elimnyama, Bhamuza and Skeyi Sensimbi. Among his proudest achievements is winning the Best Maskandi Award with his band Amathwasa under Amaqhawanentaba. The recognition remains a significant milestone in his career and serves as encouragement to continue working hard.
Despite his progress, UMAQHUZU acknowledges that the road has not always been easy. One of the biggest challenges he faces is the limited recognition that Maskandi music receives compared to other genres. He believes that traditional music often struggles to secure sufficient airplay, performance opportunities and industry support.
Yet, despite these obstacles, giving up has never crossed his mind.
“Music is my life,” he says with conviction.
